Crazy Trump Headlines Vol. 7
Day 21 of 1461 days Trump will be in Office
One week ago, Canada and Mexico were celebrating, believing they had satisfied President Donald Trump with their efforts in securing their respective borders and avoiding tariffs for at least 30 days. That went out the window yesterday when Trump unexpectedly announced he is putting tariffs on all aluminum and steel coming into the USA.
“Trump Will Impose Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum Today” New York Times, February 10, 2025.
In case you missed it, Trump extended an olive branch granting Mexico and Canada a 30-day reprieve on his intended tariffs. That was one week ago. Economists on both sides for the border have indicated the negative impact tariffs would have on the economies of both the USA and Canada and how they will drive up the cost of goods. Those predictions do not appear to have changed Trump’s mind, who also said he will soon announce additional reciprocal tariffs on the USA’s trading partners. For their part, Canada is waiting for the announcement to be delivered in writing before responding to the news. Trump did proceed with his planned 10% tariff against China. The tariffs China announced against the USA in response will take effect today. Canada is the USA’s largest supplier of steel.
